Which countries or cities have the strongest expressionist art scenes and why?

Well, I can think of a few countries and cities that are known for having strong expressionist art scenes. One of the first that comes to mind is Germany, particularly the city of Dresden. This is where the Die Brücke (The Bridge) movement began in 1905, which was a group of young artists who sought to renew German art by rejecting academic conventions and embracing intense colors and thick brushstrokes. They focused on expressing emotion and felt that art should communicate truths that could not be expressed in words.

Another city that has a strong expressionist art scene is New York. This city has been a hub for art movements since the late 19th century, and it has continued to be a center for emerging artists and avant-garde movements. One of the most famous expressionist artists to come out of New York was Jackson Pollock, who's action painting style was part of the abstract expressionist movement that originated in the 1940s and 1950s. His work was characterized by large, gestural strokes that were often made with his entire body.

Moving on to Latin America, I would say that one country that has a strong expressionist art scene is Mexico. Mexican expressionism grew out of the country's dramatic social and political upheavals during the early 20th century. Artists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and David Alfaro Siqueiros were all part of the movimento muralista (muralist movement), which aimed to create artworks that were accessible to the masses and that dealt with everyday themes and struggles.

Finally, I would also mention Japan as having a notable expressionist art scene. The Gutai Art Association, which was founded in Osaka in 1954, was a group of artists who sought to explore new forms of artistic expression that were rooted in the materiality of the art object itself. They experimented with materials such as sand, oil, and tar, and they often incorporated performance into their pieces.

So, why do these countries or cities have such strong expressionist art scenes? I think that it has to do with a combination of factors, including historical context, social and political upheavals, and a desire to break away from traditional artistic conventions. Expressionism is all about communicating intense emotion and exploring the limits of what art can do, and these artists and movements were driven by a passion for creating something new and meaningful.
