Should sci-fi TV shows have more representation and diversity?

Westworld has featured a range of characters with disabilities. Doctor Who has always kept its audience on its toes with its change in leads. These are all encouraging developments. At the same time, there's still much work to do, and many shows are lagging behind.

One argument that has been made against greater representation and diversity in sci-fi is that the genre is meant to be escapist - a way to immerse oneself in a fantasy world that may be removed from reality. But I believe that this argument is precisely why representation and diversity are so important. If we only ever see a narrow range of experiences and perspectives in the genre, then we're denying ourselves the ability to truly escape and explore new horizons. Sci-fi can and should push boundaries and explore uncharted territory, including the diversity of humanity.

It's worth noting, too, that greater representation in sci-fi doesn't just make sense from a social justice standpoint - it makes good storytelling sense, too. Diverse perspectives lead to richer, more complex narratives. When a sci-fi show introduces characters from different backgrounds, it creates opportunities for fresh conflicts, new alliances, and unique worldviews that can challenge assumptions about our own world. It also helps the genre to stay fresh and relevant.

All in all, I think more representation and diversity in sci-fi TV shows is something that can benefit everyone involved - creators, viewers, and society more broadly. As a fan of the genre, I'm excited about where it can go and who it can represent in the future.
