Well, as a surfer myself, I have to say that there is definitely a correlation between the quality of waves and the popularity of a surfing spot. Typically, spots with better waves tend to attract more experienced and skilled surfers, which in turn increases the level of competition for waves and creates a buzz around the area. On the other hand, spots with weaker waves tend to attract more beginner surfers, which can detract from the overall quality of the experience.

Of course, this is not a hard and fast rule, and there are certainly exceptions. For example, some spots might be known for having particularly difficult or dangerous waves, which can be a draw for experienced surfers regardless of whether the waves are objectively "better" or not. Additionally, some surf spots might just have a certain vibe or atmosphere that makes them popular regardless of the wave quality – maybe there are great pubs or restaurants nearby, or the local surf community is particularly strong.

That being said, I would still argue that the quality of waves is one of the most important factors in determining a surf spot's popularity. Think about it – surfers are chasing the ultimate wave, the one that will give them the best ride, the most excitement, the most challenge. So it makes sense that they would gravitate towards spots known for consistent, high-quality waves.
