What are the potential consequences of governments limiting civil liberties in the name of national security?

Governments sometimes say that they need to limit some of our freedoms to keep us safe from danger. They might use words like "national security" or "terrorism" to try and make us feel like the limitations are needed.

But, taking away our civil liberties can have bad consequences. Civil liberties are things like freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of assembly. When we lose those rights, it can make us feel like we aren't really free anymore.

When the government limits our civil liberties, it can also lead to discrimination and prejudice. Sometimes, these limitations are only placed on certain groups of people, like immigrants or people of a certain religion. This can be really sad and unfair.

Another consequence of limiting civil liberties is that it can lead to mistrust between the government and the people. If we can't trust the government to respect our rights and freedoms, we might not trust them to do other things either. This can cause more problems and make it harder for us to work together.

Lastly, it's important to remember that taking away our civil liberties doesn't always make us safer! Sometimes, it can actually make things more dangerous.
