Lyme disease is a sickness that can happen when a tick bites you. A tick is a little bug that can live on animals like deer or mice. When a tick bites you, it can give you a germ called Borrelia burgdorferi. This germ can make you sick with Lyme disease.

The first symptom of Lyme disease is usually a red spot where the tick bit you. This spot can get bigger and bigger, and it might look like a bull's eye. It can be itchy or painful.

Other symptoms of Lyme disease can be flu-like. That means you might feel tired, achy, and have a headache or a fever. You might also have swollen glands.

If you have Lyme disease, you might feel like you have the flu for a few weeks. If it's not treated, you might start to have more serious symptoms. These can include:

- pain in your joints or muscles
- feeling dizzy or having trouble thinking
- feeling numb or tingly in your arms, legs, or face
- having a hard time seeing or hearing
- having heart problems or trouble breathing

If you think you might have Lyme disease, tell a grown-up right away. They can take you to the doctor, who will check if you have the germ that causes Lyme disease.

To prevent getting Lyme disease, you can do a few things:

- Wear long sleeves and pants when you go outside, especially in areas where there might be ticks.
- Use bug spray that has DEET on your skin and clothes.
- Check yourself (or have a grown-up check you) for ticks after you've been outside.
- If you find a tick on you, tell a grown-up right away so they can help you get it off.

Remember, if you think you might have Lyme disease, don't be afraid to tell a grown-up and get help. It's important to take care of your health!
