Is alchemy still practiced today? If so, where and by whom?
Alchemy as a practice originated in ancient Greece and Egypt and continued through the Middle Ages and Renaissance in Europe. During this time, it was considered a legitimate scientific pursuit with the goal of transforming base metals into gold, finding the elixir of life, and understanding the nature of the universe.
Today, while alchemy as a specific practice has largely been replaced by modern chemistry, there are still individuals and groups who practice variations of alchemy. These individuals are often referred to as modern-day alchemists or hermeticists.
Modern-day alchemists draw inspiration from the historical practice of alchemy, but may incorporate elements of Eastern mysticism, Gnosticism, or other spiritual practices into their work. They may also focus more on the psychological and spiritual aspects of alchemy rather than the physical transformations of metals.
There are a few organizations that are known to practice modern-day alchemy, such as the Alchemy Guild and the International Alchemy Guild. These groups offer workshops, conferences, and training programs for those interested in pursuing alchemy as a practice.
In addition to these organized groups, there are also individuals who practice alchemy independently or as part of a spiritual or philosophical practice. However, due to the secretive nature of alchemy, it can be difficult to determine the exact number of individuals who still practice it today.
In conclusion, while alchemy as a specific practice is no longer as prevalent as it was in the past, there are still modern-day alchemists who draw inspiration from its historical roots. These individuals may be found in organized groups or practicing independently, and may focus on the psychological and spiritual aspects of alchemy rather than the physical transformations of metals.
