We might say that the theme of the story is "coming of age," which means the girl is learning important lessons about life and herself. We might also talk about the motifs, or recurring symbols, in the story, like a particular place or object that keeps showing up. By analyzing these motifs, we can see how they relate to the overall theme and message of the story.

So literary terms help us see more than just the surface of a story or poem. They help us uncover the deeper meanings and messages that the writer is trying to convey.
