How does political and social philosophy shape national policies?

Political and social philosophy has a tremendous impact on the manner in which national policies are shaped. Political philosophy deals with the principles and values governing the state's institutions, how it is run, and the relationship between the citizens and the government. In contrast, social philosophy focuses on understanding the social structures and systems that are in place within a society.

Political philosophy influences national policies by providing a framework for the government by which it can establish what is right and what is wrong. It is through the principles of this philosophy that governments form their policies on public issues such as taxation, healthcare, education, and defense, among many others. The principles of political philosophy also guide the choice of political participants and the very structures of representation. For instance, a government that subscribes to liberalism will have the individual as the focus and protector of political power, while in a conservative regime, community values and traditions govern.

Social philosophy affects national policies in a multitude of ways. This philosophy is concerned with describing how individuals are integrated into the various groups or institutions they are part of, including families, cultures, and societies. It is through social philosophy that policies are crafted that address issues related to equality, inclusivity and access to goods and services. Social philosophy also addresses issues such as social injustice, discrimination, and inequality and seeks to offer solutions to these problems.

For instance, in addressing issues of inequality in a society, a government might emphasize policies that focus on progressive taxes, increase the minimum wage, or provide affordable housing for all. Social philosophy can also shape policies on environmental protection, where a government might enact policies that prohibit the exploitation of natural resources or restrict the release of pollution. It is through this philosophy that issues regarding social programs, pensions, and income distribution for the aged or vulnerable individuals become addressed.
