Who are some of the most well-known art critics in the world?
Well, there are quite a few art critics that are pretty well-known around the world. I think it really depends on what kind of art people are interested in, but there are some that are pretty universally recognized.
One critic that immediately comes to mind is Jerry Saltz. He's been a critic for a long time and has won a Pulitzer Prize for his writing on art. He's a pretty controversial figure and has written some pretty scathing reviews, but a lot of people really respect his opinion on contemporary art.
Another critic that's pretty famous is Roberta Smith. She's the co-chief art critic for The New York Times and has been covering the art world for decades. She's really well-respected and has a lot of influence in the art world.
Peter Schjeldahl is another critic that's pretty well-known. He's been writing for The New Yorker for a long time and is known for his intelligent and nuanced writing. He's also a pretty good storyteller and has a talent for making even the most complex art accessible to a wider audience.
If you're interested in more academic critics, there's Rosalind Krauss. She's a professor of art history at Columbia University and is one of the leading theorists in contemporary art. Her writing can be a bit dense, but if you want to really understand the theoretical underpinnings of modern art, she's definitely worth checking out.
Other critics that are worth mentioning include Ben Davis, Holland Cotter, and Sebastian Smee. All of them have impressive resumes and have written some really insightful critiques of contemporary art.
Of course, there are a ton of other art critics out there, and everyone has their own opinion on who's worth paying attention to. But I think the ones I've mentioned are a good starting point if you're interested in learning more about the art world and the people who shape our understanding of it.
