Technology has been a very important tool to help understand and address the challenges facing civilizations that are close to extinction in ancient and prehistoric history.

One of the biggest challenges that these civilizations faced was the lack of resources, like food and water. To address this challenge, people used technology to invent new ways to irrigate farmland or to find new sources of water. For example, ancient people in Mesopotamia and Egypt built irrigation canals and dams to control the flow of water from rivers to their crops. They used simple machines like the shaduf to lift water from the river up to their fields.

Another challenge was the constant threat of natural disasters, like floods, droughts, and earthquakes. People developed technology to help predict these events, and to lessen their impact when they did occur. For example, ancient Romans built earthquake-resistant buildings and bridges, and they created devices to measure the depth of a river or the weight of snow on a roof to prevent collapse.

Finally, many ancient and prehistoric civilizations faced the challenge of disease and illness. They used technology to find treatments and cures for these ailments. For example, ancient Greeks used herbs and plants to create medicines, and ancient Chinese used acupuncture and moxibustion to treat illnesses.
