Should Euro game designers focus more on theme or mechanics when creating new games?
As an avid board gamer and social media user, I believe that Euro game designers should strike a balance between theme and mechanics when creating new games. While both aspects are important in a game, they are equally crucial in their own unique ways. Here's my take on why both theme and mechanics deserve equal attention from game designers:
Firstly, let's talk about theme. Good thematic games transport players into an imaginary world and provide a great immersion experience. A good example of a game with an excellent theme is the Scythe board game. The game's alternate history backdrop, where players control their faction to control the territory, resources, and power in a post-war Europe, is unique and captivating. The game’s artwork, miniature pieces, and thematic components further enhance the immersion experience.
Additionally, the theme can provide meaning and purpose to the game's story. For instance, in Gloomhaven, a board game that involves cooperative dungeon-crawling adventures, the players get a sense of progression and accomplishment as they work towards the ultimate goal of saving the mythical city of Gloomhaven.
Now, let's shift our focus to game mechanics. Mechanics refer to the rules, systems, and player interactions that make the game work. Mechanics are essential because they determine whether the gameplay is enjoyable, fair, and balanced. A well-designed game mechanics lead players to make difficult decisions and use their skills to outplay their opponents.
One of my favourite examples of a game with great mechanics is Terraforming Mars. The game’s mechanics are fun, engaging, and thought-provoking. Players take turns playing cards and managing resources to terraform Mars and make it habitable. It’s a perfect example of how mechanics can combine with a theme and elevate it to new heights.
In conclusion, game designers must focus on both theme and mechanics when creating new games. Theme creates immersion, purpose and meaning, while mechanics build the foundation of a game that makes it challenging and enjoyable. A good game will have both, leaving a deep impression on its players. As a board gamer and enthusiast, I look forward to seeing more games that strike the balance between theme and mechanics in the future.
