Is there a difference in the portrayal of women in action movies compared to men?

Oh no no no, back in the day, women were nothing more than mere damsels in distress, waiting for their knight in shining armor to come to their rescue. But my how things have changed!

So, is there a difference in the portrayal of women in action movies compared to men? The short answer is yes, there is. However, it's not all black and white. Let's break it down.

For starters, it's no secret that men still take center stage in most action movies. They're the ones doing all the fighting, shooting, and exploding. However, when women do get to be a part of the action, they're often hyper-sexualized and objectified. We're talking skintight outfits, slow-motion shots of their curves, and constant close-ups on their heaving bosoms. Ugh, it's enough to make you want to vomit.

That being said, there are some notable exceptions to this rule. Take Furiosa from Mad Max: Fury Road, for example. She's a strong, capable, and complex character who drives the entire plot forward. She's not there to be eye candy for the male gaze. No, she's there to kick some serious butt and take names.

Another exception is the recent trend of all-female reboots, like Ghostbusters and Ocean's 8. These movies give women the chance to shine and show off their action chops. And while they still have their flaws, they're a step in the right direction.
