I think that the prevalence of CGI in modern action movies can hurt the genre, but it depends on how it is used. Too much CGI can take away from the realism and immersion of the movie, making it feel like a video game rather than a movie. On the other hand, when CGI is used effectively, it can enhance the action and bring the audience deeper into the story.

One issue with CGI is that it can be overused, leading to a lack of physicality and believability in the film. When every explosion, fight scene and car chase is obviously computer-generated, it can be hard for the audience to connect with the action. It can also be distracting, pulling viewers out of the story.

Another issue is that CGI can be used as a crutch. Filmmakers may rely on CGI to create exciting action sequences rather than relying on good storytelling, character development, and direction. This can result in a generic and forgettable action movie that lacks substance.

On the other hand, when CGI is used appropriately, it can enhance the action and bring the audience deeper into the story. In movies like “Avatar” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, CGI was used to create entire worlds, creatures, and battles that would have been impossible to achieve without it.
