What are some unique historical sites in Africa that are often overlooked by tourists?

There are actually many historical sites in Africa that are often overlooked by tourists. As an avid traveler and history enthusiast, I would like to share some of my personal favorites.

One site that comes to mind is the Aksum Obelisk in Ethiopia. This massive stone tower was erected by the ancient Aksumite Kingdom sometime between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. It stands over 80 feet tall and is adorned with intricately carved decorations, including depictions of the Aksumite royal family. Despite its impressive size and historical significance, the obelisk remains relatively unknown outside of Ethiopia. It was even dismantled and stolen by Italian forces during their occupation of Ethiopia in the 1930s, but was eventually returned in 2005 and reassembled in its original location.

Another hidden gem is the Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali. This mosque is a testament to the incredible architectural skills of the Djenné people, who constructed it entirely out of mud bricks. The mosque dates back to the 13th century, but has undergone many renovations over the years. It is still in use today and is considered one of the most important religious buildings in West Africa. Unfortunately, the mosque is not well-known outside of Mali and is often overshadowed by more famous African landmarks.

One particularly fascinating but often overlooked site is the Sijilmasa ruins in Morocco. Sijilmasa was once a bustling trading town that served as a gateway to the Sahara desert. It was founded in the 8th century and remained an important center of commerce and culture for centuries. Today, the ruins of Sijilmasa are largely forgotten and hidden beneath layers of sand. However, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Saharan trade routes and the important role played by North African societies in global commerce.

These are just a few examples of the many unique historical sites in Africa that are often overlooked by tourists. I encourage anyone interested in history or off-the-beaten-path travel to seek out these hidden gems and explore the rich cultural heritage of the continent.
