Despite this, they were able to put their differences aside in order to fight against a common enemy.

Another successful political alliance that comes to mind is the European Union. This alliance was formed in order to promote economic and political cooperation between its member states. One of the factors that contributed to its success was the fact that it was formed in the aftermath of two devastating world wars, and many Europeans were eager to find a way to prevent another such conflict from occurring. Additionally, the EU has been successful in promoting democracy by holding its member states to certain democratic standards and providing funding to support democratic reforms.

Finally, I would also mention the alliance between South Africa's Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk. This unlikely partnership brought together a leader of the anti-apartheid movement and the President of South Africa, who had previously supported the apartheid system.
