During this race, a severe storm hit the participants leaving 19 dead and 15 boats destroyed. This accident triggered the development of advanced weather forecasting technology and safety protocols.

Another disaster that comes to mind is the capsizing of Artemis Racing's catamaran during the America's Cup Challenger Series in San Francisco Bay in 2013. The accident resulted in the death of sailor Andrew Simpson.
