Which famous authors have been a part of book clubs, and what did they gain from their experiences?

I think that being a part of a book club can give authors a chance to connect with readers on a more personal level. That being said, I imagine that some authors might find it intimidating to have their work scrutinized in a group setting. I also wonder if some authors might feel like being part of a book club is "beneath" them, or if they might worry that they won't be taken seriously if they're seen as participating in something that's more casual.
