One of the main ways that monotheism has contributed to scientific progress is by promoting a belief in a rational, ordered universe that can be understood and explored through reason and observation. This intellectual tradition is evident in the works of prominent monotheistic scholars and thinkers throughout history. For example, Muslim scholars made significant advancements in fields such as mathematics, astronomy, and medicine during the Islamic Golden Age, which was fueled in part by a belief in the importance of scientific inquiry and discovery. Similarly, many Christian philosophers and scientists have argued that the natural world offers evidence of an intelligent designer, thereby spurring scientific research into the structures and mechanisms of the universe.

In contrast, polytheism generally does not emphasize the idea of a single, unified universe that can be understood through rational inquiry. In many polytheistic belief systems, the natural world is seen as being inhabited by a wide array of unpredictable and often capricious gods and spirits, which can make it difficult to discern patterns or laws in the natural world. While this does not necessarily mean that polytheists are less interested in science or technology, it may explain why monotheism has historically been more closely associated with scientific progress.
