Water is a fundamental component of life, and its pollution can result in severe health and environmental hazards. Fortunately, the government is taking appropriate measures to prevent the reckless disposal of wastes that result in water pollution.

In the United States, the Clean Water Act (CWA) is a primary government policy enacted to control and prevent water pollution. CWA requires industries and municipalities to obtain permits before discharging effluent into water bodies. The permits specify the amount and nature of pollutants that can be disposed of and the frequency of monitoring to ensure that the limits set in the permit are adhered to.

Another policy created by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), which requires these industries and municipalities to submit regularly scheduled reports to the regulatory authorities on the quality of their wastewater discharges.

Additionally, the EPA initiated the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) program, which sets limits on the maximum amount of pollution allowed to be discharged into water bodies. This program ensures that industries and municipalities adopt appropriate waste management techniques to reduce water pollution.

Moreover, the Clean Air Act (CAA) also plays a vital role in preventing water pollution. Emissions resulting from industrial activities can lead to air pollution that falls back into water bodies as acid rain. The CAA aims to reduce air pollution and help prevent water pollution.

Another policy worth mentioning is the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which requires industries to treat hazardous wastes appropriately. Industries are required to evaluate their waste management strategies and take appropriate measures to minimize the hazardous waste produced.

Furthermore, the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is in place to protect the quality of drinking water. It ensures that drinking water meets the safety standards and is free from pollutants.
