Are there any RPG board games that you would consider to be overrated? Why?
Hey buddy,
To answer your question, there are a handful of RPG board games that I consider to be overrated. These games are often talked about as the "best" in the genre, but I feel that they fall short in certain areas.
First on my list is Dungeons & Dragons. Don't get me wrong, it's an iconic game that has been around for decades and paved the way for countless others in the RPG genre. However, I feel that its mechanics are outdated and often don't flow well. The game also heavily relies on the creativity of the players, which can be a downside for those who may not be as imaginative.
Another game that I think is overrated is Gloomhaven. While it's been praised for its massive campaign and intricate world-building, I found it to be too complex and convoluted. The game requires a lot of set-up time and has a steep learning curve that can be off-putting for new players. Additionally, I found that the combat system can be repetitive and dull.
A third overrated RPG board game is Pathfinder. Similar to Dungeons & Dragons, it's a game that has been around for a long time and has a dedicated fan base. However, I found it to be too rule-heavy and limited in terms of character customization. The game also has a tendency to become too combat-focused, which can take away from the storytelling aspect of RPGs.
Lastly, I feel that Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is overrated. While the game has a rich lore and a large following, I found it to be too niche and difficult to get into. The game relies heavily on the Warhammer Fantasy universe, which can be intimidating for players who aren't familiar with it. Additionally, the combat system can be confusing and slow-paced.
Of course, these are just my personal opinions and I know that many people enjoy these games. However, for me, there are other RPG board games that I find to be much more enjoyable and well-designed.
Thanks for asking and I hope this helps!
Best,
