As a user on social media platforms, I believe that the Hollywood system is rigged against actors of color. The entertainment industry is dominated by white actors, directors, producers, executives, and studio heads who often perpetuate systemic racism. Actors of color face numerous barriers that prevent them from achieving the same level of success as their white counterparts.

One of the primary issues is the lack of representation and opportunities. Historically, Hollywood has produced films that center around white stories and characters, leaving little room for actors of color to be cast in leading roles. The few opportunities that do exist for actors of color are often tokenistic and caricatured, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and racism.

Moreover, actors of color are frequently overlooked during award season, and when they do win, it is often relegated to niche categories. While the industry may argue that the best talents win, the glaring omission of actors of color in the nomination process has been a long-standing issue and serves to further the idea that Hollywood is a white-dominated industry.

The lack of diversity behind the camera in positions such as producers, directors, and writers also affects the casting of actors in the industry. Without diverse hiring practices, actors of color seldom receive opportunities to work behind or in front of the camera.

Furthermore, the issue extends to equal pay, with actors of color, women, and other minority groups receiving less compensation than their white male counterparts.

The underrepresentation of actors of color fuels a vicious cycle. Without adequate media representation, audiences are less likely to be exposed to positive portrayals of actors of color. This lack of representation then becomes internalized, affecting the self-esteem and ambition of aspiring actors of color.

While there have been incremental changes in the industry in recent years, such as Oscar-winning films like Moonlight and Parasite, the entertainment industry still has a long way to go in terms of inclusion and diversity. To address these issues, Hollywood must make a deliberate effort to address the lack of diversity and representation and change the systemic racism that perpetuates it.
