In the past, it was difficult for regular folks to make their voices heard in the political sphere. But thanks to social media platforms, people can easily join together and form effective political movements.

For instance, the Arab Spring is an excellent example of how social mobilization has transformed political movements. Millions of people in the Arab world came together on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to voice their opinions and lobby for change. While these movements were initially peaceful, they eventually led to widespread unrest and revolt that toppled many dictatorships in the Arab world.

Looking at the numbers, it’s clear that social mobilization has made a significant impact on political movements. According to one study, more than half of the world's population uses social media regularly. That means social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are serving as virtual meeting halls where people can share their ideas and viewpoints.

On Twitter alone, political tweets increased by more than 250% since 2011, indicating that people are discussing politics more and becoming increasingly engaged with political issues. Additionally, social media is proving to be a key tool for political campaigns and activists, as seen during the U.S. Presidential election in 2016, where Donald Trump effectively used his Twitter account to campaign.

But while social mobilization can have a positive impact on political movements, it can also lead to division and unrest. For instance, during the 2016 election, bots on Twitter and Facebook were used to spread fake news and propaganda, leading to division and confusion among voters.
