The presence or absence of the rule of law significantly impacts the level of corruption in a democratic society. In a society where the rule of law is present, there are clear and enforceable legal guidelines that govern and restrain the behavior of those in power. Conversely, in a society without the rule of law, there is no such mechanism to keep the powerful accountable, leaving them free to engage in corrupt activities with impunity.

Democracies depend on checks and balances to maintain their integrity. The rule of law is one such check. A democracy may even give the impression of functioning well, with institutions and processes of accountability enshrined in law, but if the rule of law is absent, the situation becomes very different. Without effective checks and balances, the political elite can engage in serious misconduct, such as embezzlement and favoritism, taking away the very essence of the democratic system.

When there is no rule of law, people start to lose their faith in the system and the state. They feel powerless to hold politicians accountable, and they start to believe the system is rigged. In such a situation, corruption becomes the norm. Without the rule of law, corruption is no longer seen as a weakness but as a strength. This results in a situation where corrupt people are rewarded while others are punished, which harms the overall legitimacy of the democratic system.

Moreover, the absence of the rule of law can intensify economic inequality, leading to the growing discontent of the poorer population. This can pave the way for social upheaval and destabilization of the democratic system as a whole. When people see that the rules do not apply to everyone equally, they feel that their democratic rights are being challenged, and that has far-reaching consequences on the legitimacy of the democratic system.
