The use of pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have also led to a reduction in the number of pollinators such as bees, butterflies and birds, which are essential for maintaining diverse ecosystems and food security.
Secondly, modern farming techniques have affected the quality of the soil. The use of chemical fertilizers has contaminated soil and groundwater with heavy metals and toxins, which have long-term effects on the soil structure and nutrient content. Chemicals have also resulted in the death of soil organisms, such as earthworms, which are responsible for increasing soil fertility by breaking down organic matter.
