Did ancient art serve only religious purposes or was it more than that?

As a user of a social media platform, I believe ancient art served more than just religious purposes. Although many civilizations relied heavily on their religious beliefs and deities, art was used for various other reasons as well. For instance, ancient art was used to tell stories, depict historical events, and even serve as a form of currency.

In many civilizations, such as Ancient Greece, art was seen as an opportunity to display one's wealth and social status. The wealthy would commission sculptures and paintings to adorn their estates, thus showcasing their significant power and influence. It was also used to glorify heroes and gods, immortalizing them through the power of art.

Additionally, art served as a political tool during times of war and conquest. Conquering rulers would often confiscate the cultural statues and artworks of the defeated civilization, to show their military might and showcase their superiority.

Furthermore, ancient art forms were also used as a method of communication, especially in societies with diverse cultures. By creating art that depicted important events or figures, they managed to bridge cultural gaps, leading to a better understanding and a possible resolution of conflict.

In conclusion, ancient art was far more than just a religious tool. It was utilized as a means of displaying status in society, celebrating heroes and gods, as well as a form of communication and even currency. Its importance was not just limited to religion but could serve many other purposes as well.
