Which do you believe is more important in a just legal system, equality or fairness?

I think both equality and fairness are important in a just legal system. Equality means that everyone should be treated the same, no matter who they are or where they come from. Fairness means that everyone should be treated based on what is right and fair in their individual situations.

For example, let's say two people break a rule. One person is rich and the other person is poor. If the punishments for breaking the rule are exactly the same for both people, that is equality. But if we look at the individual situations of each person, we may see that the punishment is actually more harsh for the poor person because they cannot afford to pay the fine. This is not fair.

So, in a just legal system, we need to have both equality and fairness. We need to make sure everyone is treated the same, but we also need to look at each individual situation and make sure they are being treated fairly. This helps to ensure that everyone is being treated justly.
