Another great policy tool is the regulation of bycatch. Bycatch refers to the unintentional catching of non-target species, which can cause serious harm to marine animals and habitats. To address this issue, some governments and fishing industries have implemented policies like turtle excluder devices, which allow sea turtles to escape from fishing nets, and acoustic deterrent devices, which can keep seals and other marine mammals away from fishing gear.
Of course, we also can't forget about the big one: climate change. Rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and sea level rise are all major threats to marine ecosystems, and therefore require concerted global action. That's why policies like the Paris Agreement, which established a framework for countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, are so crucial.
