What is the role of cross-lingual representation learning in cross-lingual information retrieval?

Cross-lingual representation learning helps us find information in different languages!

When we use a computer to search for information online, sometimes we might want to find information in a language that we don't know very well. This can be really hard, because the computer doesn't always understand what we're looking for if we write in a different language.

That's where cross-lingual representation learning comes in! It's like teaching the computer how to understand different languages and translate them into a language that we do know. This makes it easier for us to find the information we need, no matter what language it's in.

For example, let's say we want to find out about a popular Mexican dish called "tamales". If we don't speak Spanish, it might be hard for us to find information about tamales because we don't know how to spell it or what words to use. But with cross-lingual representation learning, the computer can understand that "tamales" is a word related to Mexican food, even if we type it in English. Then it can show us websites and articles about tamales, even if they're written in Spanish.

So cross-lingual representation learning is really important for helping us find information in different languages. It makes it easier for us to learn about other cultures and understand different perspectives. Without it, we might miss out on a lot of information that could be really helpful to us!
