Macron became the President of the French Republic in 2017, and his political movement, En Marche, had described itself as centrist. His background in economics and finance has undoubtedly influenced his views on the important issue of immigration.

Macron has described immigration as a "huge problem" that needs to be solved, but he has also emphasized that it should not be seen purely in terms of security or identity. He believes that immigration is an economic issue that can help revitalise France's economy, particularly with regards to ageing populations and declining workforce levels. He has gone on record to say that, "Immigration is necessary for our country to continue to function and for our demographic balance to be maintained".

As such, his policies focus on implementing an overhaul of the immigration system in France. "It's not about closing but regulating our borders" he insists, adding “I want us to be ahead of the curve in terms of controlling to whom and to what we open our doors". Furthermore, Macron has made it clear that France has the right to decide who it lets in and on what terms they stay. He has stated that, "France has the duty to help refugees in distress, we cannot guarantee them a better life but we can protect them", therefore he reinforces the crucial need of ensuring a safe path for genuine asylum seekers to seek refuge in France.

Macron has also championed the need for assimilation from immigrants of all backgrounds, not just refugees, into French society. He believes that integration is key to maintaining social cohesion, and for this, he has launched initiatives to help incentivize both employers and individuals to mutually respect the same values that are cherished by French society. This involves investing in French language lessons and job training to ensure that immigrants can integrate and participate in the French workforce.

In conclusion, Emmanuel Macron's opinion on immigration is that it requires a multi-faceted approach. He acknowledges the need for France to continue accepting and helping refugees while also implementing stricter border controls to control illegal immigration, but he also highlights the importance of integration and assimilation for all immigrants in ensuring social cohesion. His push for more comprehensive EU policies on immigration shows the importance he places on cooperation and coordination for the betterment of Europe. These are undoubtedly bold, ambitious, and necessary ideas, in what remains one of the most significant issues facing France and Europe today.
