How have plate tectonics shaped the geographical features of the African continent?

Plate tectonics has played a significant role in shaping the geographical features of the African continent. The African continent is surrounded by different tectonic plates, and the movement of these plates has caused tremendous effects on the African landscape.

Around 200 million years ago, the African continent was part of a much larger landmass known as Pangea. Through plate tectonic movements, the African continent was separated from Pangea, and a new ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, began forming between Africa and South America. The formation of the Atlantic Ocean was the result of a divergent boundary, where tectonic plates moved apart, leading to the development of a new ocean.

Apart from the formation of the Atlantic Ocean, plate tectonics has also played a role in the formation of the African Rift Valley system. The rift valley consists of a series of faults and rifts that have formed due to the movement of different tectonic plates. The rift valley is home to some of the largest lakes in Africa, such as Lake Victoria, Tanganyika, and Malawi.

The movement of the tectonic plates has also caused the formation of mountains in Africa, such as the Atlas Mountains in North Africa and the Drakensberg Mountains in Southern Africa. These mountains were formed due to the collision of different tectonic plates, leading to the uplift of the land.
