This is because people in power can use their positions to enrich themselves – often at the expense of the rest of the population. As a result, resources are often diverted from their intended targets to benefit the few, and wealth distribution is skewed towards those who wield power.

Further, political corruption also undermines the rule of law and the institutions of democracy. This is because corruption undermines the public’s trust in government and its institutions of governance. When people feel that their leaders are corrupt, they lose confidence in the political system as a whole.

In addition, corruption can have a particularly negative impact on impoverished communities. For example, when vital resources such as education, health care, and social services are funneled to those with connections to the ruling elite instead of being spread fairly throughout society, they are more likely to be concentrated in urban areas or those areas that are politically tied to the elite.
