One of the most significant differences is the lack of legal protection. Statelessness leaves migrants and refugees vulnerable to risks, including exploitation, detention, and deportation. In contrast, those with statehood are protected by the laws and regulations of their country of origin or a host country. With legal status, migrants and refugees can enjoy the full range of rights that come with citizenship, such as the right to vote, own property, and access legal protection.

The economic situation for stateless migrants and refugees is often dire. They are often relegated to low-wage jobs, have little or no access to social welfare programs, and cannot open a bank account or own land. Without the ability to earn a living, they are forced to rely on aid from charities and NGOs.
