Well, there are a few key challenges facing chemical energy research and development that come to mind. One of the biggest challenges is the need to find alternative sources of fuel that are more efficient and less harmful to the environment. With the rise of global warming and climate change, it has become increasingly important to find ways to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere. This requires a lot of research and development to find new materials and processes that can generate energy without releasing these harmful gases.

Another challenge facing chemical energy research and development is the issue of scalability. Many of the new technologies being developed in this field are still in the early stages and are not yet proven to work on a large scale. This means that it can be difficult to justify the investment required to bring these technologies to market. Additionally, there may be regulatory hurdles and other barriers to adoption that must be overcome in order to scale up production of these new technologies.
