Can democracy be successful without transparency and accountability from those in power?

Democracy is widely known as the system of government where the power is vested in the people. But does democracy work without transparency and accountability from those in power? The answer is a resounding no. Let me explain why.

Transparency is a key pillar of democracy as it ensures that power is used in a way that benefits citizens and promotes equality. Without transparency, the government can easily hide its mistakes and cover up corruption. This can lead to a loss of confidence in the government and a lack of trust among the people. The lack of trust results in a breakdown of democracy and an increase in authoritarianism.

On the other hand, accountability plays an essential role in democratic societies. It ensures that leaders are responsible for their actions and are held accountable for any misdeeds. Without accountability, there is no incentive for leaders to act ethically or to improve governance. Accountability also promotes transparency by increasing the pressure on those in power to be more transparent and open.

Without transparency and accountability, democracy cannot function properly. As citizens, we have a responsibility to demand transparency and accountability from our elected officials. We must hold them accountable and demand transparency in their actions.

The good news is that technology has made it easier for citizens to hold their elected officials accountable. Social media has given us a platform to share information and hold our leaders accountable for their actions.
