What were the biggest surprises of the Emmy Awards this year?
As a dedicated fan of the Emmys and all things entertainment, I must say that this year's ceremony was full of surprises - both expected and unexpected. From unexpected wins to shock snubs, there was never a dull moment throughout the entire night. In my opinion, there were a few standout surprises that truly stole the show.
Firstly, it was great to see a show like "Schitt's Creek" come out on top and sweep the comedy categories. This was definitely unexpected, but not entirely surprising given the show's recent surge in popularity. The cast and crew of "Schitt's Creek" put in a lot of hard work and it was great to see them receive the recognition they deserve. It was especially heartwarming to see Emmy wins for Eugene Levy and his son Daniel, who co-created the show together.
Another surprise that I'm sure many fans and critics alike did not see coming was the triumphant return of "Watchmen". The HBO series was up against some stiff competition in the limited series category, including fan favorite "Unbelievable" and the highly acclaimed "Mrs. America". However, "Watchmen" managed to come out on top and take home an impressive 11 Emmys - more than any other show this year. This was definitely a testament to the show's quality and reminded us all why it was such a standout series last year.
One of the biggest snubs of the night, in my opinion, was Zendaya not winning for her stunning performance in "Euphoria". The young actress delivered a truly incredible performance as a troubled teenager grappling with addiction and mental health issues. Many had predicted that she would take home the award for best lead actress in a drama series, but it was ultimately won by Olivia Colman for her role in "The Crown". While Colman is no doubt a talented actress, the consensus amongst fans and critics seems to be that Zendaya's performance was truly a standout and deserving of recognition.
Lastly, the virtual format of the Emmys this year was definitely a surprise in itself. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the ceremony was held virtually with nominees tuning in from all over the world. While this was unprecedented and definitely a departure from the norm, I personally thought it was handled well and added a unique twist to the ceremony. It was interesting to see how different nominees dressed up and how they celebrated from the comfort of their own homes.
All in all, this year's Emmys definitely did not disappoint in terms of surprises and unexpected moments. From "Schitt's Creek's" triumph to Zendaya's snub, there were a lot of memorable moments that will be talked about for years to come. While we may have to wait until next year to see what other surprises the Emmys have in store, I know I'll be eagerly tuning in with bated breath.
