Can a fantasy film still be highly regarded without the use of special effects or CGI?

As an avid fan of both fantasy films and practical effects in cinema, I can confidently say that a fantasy film does not need special effects or CGI to be highly regarded. In fact, some of the most critically acclaimed and beloved fantasy films of all time have relied solely on practical effects, makeup, and practical sets, rather than big-budget special effects.

One example that immediately comes to mind is Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. This film, set in a fantastical world, relied heavily on practical effects and makeup to bring its creatures and fantastical landscapes to life. The result was a stunningly beautiful and haunting film that captivated audiences and critics alike. Similarly, the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back used practical effects and puppetry to bring the iconic character of Yoda to life, creating a timeless and beloved character that has stood the test of time.

In fact, it can be argued that relying too heavily on special effects and CGI can actually detract from the quality of a film. When CGI is overused or poorly executed, it can take audiences out of the story and make the fantastical elements feel less real. This was the case with the 2019 film Cats, in which the heavy use of CGI resulted in creepy and unsettling character designs that were widely mocked by audiences and critics.

Furthermore, a film that relies solely on special effects and CGI runs the risk of being forgotten or dismissed once the technology becomes outdated. Practical effects, on the other hand, have a timeless quality that can create a sense of nostalgia and enhance the overall viewing experience.

However, even in these films, the special effects were used in conjunction with practical effects and makeup to create a more grounded and immersive world.

Practical effects and makeup have a unique and timeless quality that can enhance the storytelling and create a more immersive viewing experience.
