The coldest temperature ever recorded in the polar regions is really, really cold! It's like when you go outside on a really cold day and your nose and fingers start to hurt! The temperature was minus 128.56 degrees Fahrenheit! That's so cold that if you tried to breathe in that cold air, your lungs would freeze immediately and you would not be able to breathe anymore. Can you imagine that?

The temperature was recorded at a place called Vostok Station in Antarctica. This is a really remote area where there are no trees or plants. It's just ice and snow all around. The scientists who recorded this temperature were really brave and had to wear special suits to stay warm. Even with the special suits, they could not stay outside for very long because the cold is just too extreme!

Now, you might be wondering why the polar regions are so cold. The reason is that they are very far away from the equator, where it's warm. The Earth is tilted on its axis, like a spinning top, and this makes some parts of the world warmer than others. The closer you are to the equator, the warmer it is. The farther you are from the equator, the colder it is.

Another thing that makes the polar regions so cold is that they are covered in ice and snow. Ice and snow reflect sunlight back into space instead of absorbing it, which makes the region colder. So, even if the sun is shining in the polar regions, it doesn't warm things up as much as it does in other parts of the world.
