Has any country ever dropped dramatically in Democracy Ranking? If so, which one?

Yeah, definitely! There have been plenty of countries that have seen dramatic drops in their democracy ranking over the years. However, one that really stands out to me in recent times is Turkey.

Turkey has traditionally been seen as one of the more democratic countries in the Middle East, with a relatively strong economy, a well-educated population, and a diverse political landscape. However, in the past decade or so, there has been a steady erosion of democratic values and institutions in Turkey, culminating in a dramatic drop in the democracy ranking in recent years.

Some of the key factors that have contributed to this decline include a crackdown on freedom of expression and the press, with many independent media outlets being shut down or taken over by the government; a lack of transparency and accountability in government decision-making; and the growing influence of conservative religious forces in politics.

There have also been concerns about the use of authoritarian tactics to maintain power, such as the arrest and imprisonment of political opponents, journalists, and activists, as well as the use of military force against Kurdish separatists.

All of these factors have contributed to a significant drop in Turkey's democracy ranking, with many international organizations now classifying it as only partly free or not free at all. This is a worrying trend, and one that could have serious implications for the country's long-term stability and prosperity.

However, it's worth noting that Turkey is by no means the only country to have seen such a decline in recent years. Many other countries around the world are also experiencing similar challenges, as the global trend towards authoritarianism and populism shows no signs of abating.

So while it's important to keep an eye on developments in Turkey and other countries that are experiencing a decline in democracy, it's also crucial that we work together as a global community to address the underlying factors that are driving this trend, and to find ways to support and strengthen democratic institutions and values around the world.
