What is the connection between Ozone depletion and climate change?

Ozone depletion and climate change are two interconnected and alarming environmental issues that are often mistaken for being the same. In reality, these two phenomena are distinct but are both happening due to human activities.

Ozone depletion refers to the breakdown of ozone molecules in the stratosphere. The thinning of the ozone layer is caused by certain man-made compounds like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were once commonly used in refrigerants, aerosols, and other products. These compounds rise to the upper atmosphere and cause a reaction that breaks down the ozone molecules, leaving the planet vulnerable to harmful ultraviolet rays that can cause skin cancer and destroy crops.

On the other hand, climate change is a broad term that encompasses globally observed changes in the Earth's weather patterns, temperature, sea levels, and other environmental factors due to human activities. Activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrialization result in a buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, contributing to the warming of the planet.

While ozone depletion and climate change are different phenomena, they are closely interrelated. One major link between the two is the effect of ozone depletion on climate change. As the ozone layer continues to thin, it allows more ultraviolet radiation to penetrate the Earth's atmosphere.
