What makes board games better than video games?

Well, as a fan of both board games and video games, I can tell you that there are a few things that make board games better in certain situations.

First of all, board games tend to be more social. When you play a board game, you're typically sitting around a table with friends or family. This can lead to some great conversations, inside jokes, and memories that you'll never forget. Video games, on the other hand, are often played alone or online with strangers. While there are certainly some multiplayer video games that are social, it's hard to beat the in-person interaction of a board game.

Secondly, board games tend to be more tactile. When you play a board game, you're physically manipulating pieces on a board, rolling dice, shuffling cards, and so on. There's something satisfying about being able to touch and move physical objects. In contrast, video games are typically controlled through a controller or keyboard/mouse. There's nothing inherently wrong with this, but it can feel less engaging than physically moving pieces around a board.

Another advantage of board games is that they tend to be more accessible to people who don't play video games. While video games are certainly more mainstream than they used to be, there are still plenty of people who don't play them for one reason or another. Board games, on the other hand, are fairly universal. Even if someone hasn't played a particular board game before, they'll likely be familiar with the basic mechanics (roll dice, move pieces, draw cards, etc.). This makes board games a great way to introduce people to gaming.

Lastly, I think board games have a certain charm to them that video games can't match. There's something about the physicality of a board game that makes it feel more "real" than a virtual world. Maybe it's the weight of the pieces, or the feel of the cards in your hands. Whatever it is, it creates a sense of nostalgia and warmth that's hard to replicate in a video game.

All that said, I'm not saying that board games are objectively better than video games. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and I enjoy both for different reasons. However, I do think that there are situations where board games are a better choice than video games. If you're looking for a social, tactile, accessible, and charming gaming experience, a board game is hard to beat.
