How has Confucianism been used to justify political and social hierarchies in different historical periods and contexts?

Confucianism is a way of thinking that started in China a really long time ago. It has been used to explain the way that society and government should work. In some times and places, people have used Confucianism to say that certain people are more important than others and should have more power.

For example, in ancient China, people used Confucianism to create a strict social hierarchy. That means that they believed that some people were better than others and should have more privileges. They thought that nobles and scholars were the most important and should be in charge, while common people should just follow their orders.

In later periods, Confucianism was used to support other types of government systems, such as monarchy or imperialism. In those cases, the idea was that one person or family should have all the power, but they should still follow the ideas of Confucianism in order to govern properly.

Even today, some people use Confucianism to justify social hierarchies. In places like South Korea, they still talk about Confucianism and respect for elders, which means that the older you are, the more important you are and the more respect you should receive.

But not everyone agrees with this way of thinking. Some people think that everyone should be treated equally, regardless of their age, gender, or social status. They think that Confucianism should be adapted to modern times and that it should not be used as an excuse to justify discrimination or inequality.
