Can political activism lead to division within a democracy?

Political activism has always been an essential aspect of democracy, as it encourages the citizens' active participation in their society. However, we cannot ignore the fact that it also has the potential to cause division within a democracy.

In the context of politics, activism refers to individuals or groups who are passionate and committed to a specific issue. It aims to bring attention to a particular problem or injustice and to influence government policies and decisions.

When political activism is carried out peacefully and with respect towards opposing views, it increases democracy's vibrancy and strengthens it. However, when activism also involves aggressive or violent actions, it can lead to a higher level of division within society.

Activism that religiously refuses to engage in constructive dialogue with people who hold opposing views also contributes to a division of opinion in a democracy. In these cases, individuals and groups may become so engrossed in furthering their cause that they no longer recognize the legitimacy of opposition.

One example of how political activism can cause division is the recent Black Lives Matter movement. While the movement was based on valid grievances surrounding racism and police brutality, some of its supporters engaged in violent and destructive activities, particularly against businesses and government buildings. This led to significant divisions among the broader public, with some identifying heavily with the BLM movement and others becoming increasingly concerned about the validity of its goals.

Likewise, the recent US election highlighted how politically engaged citizens can become quickly divided when supporting different parties and candidates. The high level of polarisation, catalysed by the 2020 presidential election and its divisive aftermath, has become a severe concern in the United States democracy. It threatens the essence of any genuine democratic system, which should be charaterised by respectful dialogue and cooperation.

In conclusion, political activism can lead to division within a democracy if it is not carried out with caution, respect, and the recognition that others can have valid opinions different from one's views. Political activism in moderation has a critical role in strengthening and sustaining democracy ideals. People who wish to remain politically active should focus on engaging in positive, constructive change in a way that fosters national unity, not division.
