What are some of the most unusual or unexpected religious expressions that you have come across in your travels?

I've been lucky enough to visit many different places with diverse religious beliefs, and I've come across some truly unique and unexpected expressions of faith.

One experience that stands out to me was when I visited the Monkey Temple in Jaipur, India. While the temple is technically a Hindu site, there's also a strong Buddhist influence there. The monkeys that live around the temple are believed to be descendants of the god Hanuman, who is revered in Hinduism. But I was surprised to learn that many of the monkeys are also seen as manifestations of Buddha, who is honored in Buddhism.

While I was there, I saw a group of people gather around a monkey that was sitting in front of a small shrine. They were offering it food and flowers, and seemed to be praying to it. I asked one of the locals about this, and they explained that some people believe that the monkeys have the power to answer prayers and grant blessings. I found it fascinating that two different religions could merge in such a unique way.

Another unexpected expression of religious belief that I encountered was in Luang Prabang, Laos. This city is known for its many Buddhist temples, and I spent hours exploring them. However, I was surprised to discover that there's also a strong animist influence in the region. Animism is the belief that all objects, both animate and inanimate, have a spirit or soul.

At one of the temples, I saw a woman with a bundle of sticks that had been decorated with ribbons and other offerings. She was performing a ritual that involved transferring the spirits of her ancestors into the sticks, which she would then take home with her. I was amazed by the level of detail and dedication that went into this practice.

Finally, I must mention my experience at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. This is one of the holiest sites in Christianity, as it's believed to be the place where Jesus was crucified and buried. The church is shared by multiple denominations, each of which has their own section of the church and their own rituals.

While I was there, I saw Orthodox priests walking around with buckets of incense, swinging them in circles and spreading the fragrance throughout the church. It was a completely surreal experience, as the smell of the incense mixed with the various prayers and hymns being sung throughout the church. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the deep level of devotion that was on display.

All of these experiences have taught me that there are so many different ways to express religious belief and that it's important to keep an open mind and be respectful of others' beliefs.
