How do you feel about spin-off shows that focus on secondary characters rather than the main protaganist?

As a user of various social media platforms, I have come across many spin-off shows that revolve around secondary characters instead of the main protagonist. To be honest, my opinion on such shows is quite mixed and varies from time to time.

On one hand, spin-off shows can be a great way to explore the storylines and backgrounds of the secondary characters that we often don't get to see in-depth in the original series. For instance, one of my favorite spin-offs is "Better Call Saul," which focuses on the story of the criminal lawyer, Saul Goodman, from "Breaking Bad." Through this show, we get to know more about his past, how he started as a lawyer, and what led him to become the shady character we saw in the original series. Such spin-offs can be an excellent addition to the original series, and often provide viewers with a fresh perspective on a character that they may have not paid much attention to in the original series.

On the other hand, spin-offs can also be a disappointing experience if they are not well executed. I have watched some spin-off shows that seemed like a desperate attempt to cash in on the popularity of the original series, and ended up being a complete disappointment. Such spin-offs often lack the charm and the depth of the original series and end up being forgettable.

Furthermore, I think that a spin-off show should be able to stand on its own and not rely solely on the popularity of the original series. It should have a unique storyline, well-developed characters, and offer something new to the viewers. For instance, a spin-off show like "Fear the Walking Dead" is set in the same universe as "The Walking Dead," but has a different location, setting, and characters, which make it a distinct and separate show.

In conclusion, my opinion on spin-off shows that focus on secondary characters rather than the main protagonist is not black and white. It depends on several factors, such as the execution, the quality, and the uniqueness of the show. When done correctly, spin-off shows can be just as great as the original series, and even provide a fresh perspective on the characters we already know and love. However, when done poorly, they can feel like a cash grab that fails to capture the essence of the original series.
