Should the responsibility for biodiversity conservation and preservation fall solely on the activism of citizens, or is governmental action necessary?

In my opinion, both citizens and the government have a crucial role to play in biodiversity conservation and preservation. While activism by citizens can certainly help create awareness and put pressure on the government to take action, it is ultimately the responsibility of the government to make and enforce policies that protect our planet's biodiversity.

There are many statistics that highlight the importance of taking action to protect biodiversity. For example, the World Wildlife Fund's 2020 Living Planet Report found that the world has lost an average of 68% of its wild mammal, bird, amphibian, reptile, and fish populations since 1970. This is a shocking figure and should be a wake-up call for us all.

Citizens can certainly play a role in biodiversity conservation by supporting conservation efforts, reducing their own impact on the environment, and using their voices to raise awareness. However, without strong policies and enforcement from the government, these actions may not be enough.

The government has a responsibility to set targets for biodiversity conservation and preservation, as well as to create policies and regulations to achieve these targets. For example, governments can create protected areas for wildlife, ban the use of harmful pesticides, and incentivize sustainable agriculture practices.

Unfortunately, not all governments are committed to protecting biodiversity. The International Union for Conservation of Nature's 2020 Red List found that one in four species of mammals and one in eight species of birds are at risk of extinction. This is a clear indication that more needs to be done.

In conclusion, while citizen activism can certainly help raise awareness and put pressure on the government to take action, it is ultimately the responsibility of the government to protect our planet's biodiversity. Governments must take their responsibility seriously and create and enforce strong policies to protect species and their habitats for generations to come.
