How do the recent film industry trends compare to those of a decade ago?
Hey there!
When it comes to the recent film industry trends, there's been quite a bit of changes in comparison to those from a decade ago.
One of the biggest shifts has been a move towards franchises and sequels. While franchises were a fairly common occurrence a decade ago, it's become one of the main driving forces in the industry now - with movies like the Avengers series or Star Wars movies being prime examples. It's created a bit of a catch-22 situation, where both studios and audiences seem to be flocking towards familiar territory.
Another trend that has been increasing recently is the focus on diverse representation - both in front of and behind the camera. A decade ago, there weren't as many conversations around these topics, but now filmmakers strive harder to represent different kinds of people, stories, and cultures in their work. We're seeing more women and people of color (POC) being given prominent roles in movies, something that used to be a rarity.
One thing that hasn't really changed much is how much money is a driving force in the film industry. Studios are still driven by box office earnings and international markets, and this has stayed largely consistent over the years. In fact, it's become even more important now, with the way streaming services are impacting theatrical revenue. Studios are finding it harder to attract people to cinemas, so it's become more important to make movies that translate well to international markets.
Another trend that has emerged is the rise of streaming services themselves. A decade ago, Netflix was still mostly just a DVD rental service - but now it's become a behemoth of the streaming world, producing its own movies and TV shows. Other services like Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Disney+ have also entered the scene, offering up original content to compete with the traditional studios. It's created a bit of a strange situation where movies can now be watched anywhere, anytime, and on various devices - making things like box office earnings less of a barometer for success.
Overall, I'd say the industry has seen quite a bit of shifting over the past decade. While some things - like the focus on money and the desire for franchises - have remained the same, there have been changes that are encouraging as well. More representation and the rise of streaming services has created a more diverse and accessible film landscape.
That's my take on it, what about yours?
