Taoism emphasized the Tao, which means "the way" or "the path," and teaches followers to live in harmony with the Tao and nature. Many of Confucius' teachings, such as his focus on ethical behavior and moral values, are evident in Taoism, particularly in the emphasis placed on personal cultivation.

Buddhism, which originated in India, made its way to China in the first century CE and began to have an impact on Chinese philosophy and religion. Buddhism's teachings were initially taught to the elite and nobility but eventually became more widespread.
