Guggenheim was traveling with his mistress at the time, but famously refused to leave the ship without her. He reportedly said, "We are dressed in our best and are prepared to go down like gentlemen." Both Guggenheim and his mistress died in the sinking.

William Randolph Hearst, the famous newspaper publisher, was another person who traveled by ocean liner in the early 20th century. He was a frequent passenger on the Mauretania, which was one of the fastest and most luxurious ships of its time. Hearst reportedly enjoyed the social scene on board the ship, which included celebrity guests and high-society elites.

Other famous travelers on ocean liners over the years include the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, who famously abdicated the British throne in 1936 so that Edward could marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée. The couple traveled frequently on ocean liners throughout their lives.
