Like Stalin, he oversaw the transformation of his country from an agricultural society to an industrial one, but his policies also caused untold suffering. Mao's utopian vision of a classless society led to the deaths of millions of people through starvation, execution, and forced labor.

These three leaders are just some of the most prominent examples of figures who spread totalitarianism. In each case, the leader maintained strict control over every aspect of society, from the economy to the media to education. They all sought to create a society that was completely controlled by a single party or leader, with no room for opposition.
