What role have traditional institutions like religion and government played in progressive movements?

Since the dawn of time, traditional institutions like religion and government have played a significant role in progressive movements worldwide. Their influence has been observed on shaping communities, social reform, and political progression.

Religion, for example, has had a profound impact on progressive movements through the ages. For a long time, religious leaders and institutions promoted several social campaigns and struggled for the rights and fair treatment of individuals - civil rights, peace and anti-slavery movements are some examples. Inherently, religion has always been intertwined with politics in advocating for social change and uniting groups, and this continues to be the case today.

The structure of modern governments has historically played out in numerous ways on progressive movements globally. Many political systems have failed to deliver on initial goals for which they were established, which led to many progressive movements demanding reforms and radical changes. Governments have often had a conservative view towards movements for change, but in developed countries like the US and UK, the governments have made progress on long-term progressive movements on civil rights, labor rights and environmental issues.

Looking at modern times, religious and government institutions still play a critical role in progressive movements globally. We see the traditional institutions run charities, aid organizations and non-governmental organizations that address lofty issues such as poverty, human rights, and environmental issues - an issue which is critical in today's world. It is worth noting that traditional institutions, no matter their form, may encounter opposition to their values and structures. In these cases, it takes time, effort, and resources to regain public trust and to try to bridge the divide and work towards a common goal.

In conclusion, it is fair to say that both religion and government institutions have had a significant contribution to progressive movements over time. They have sometimes been on the wrong side of history, but increasingly they understand their role in promoting social justice and change, and ultimately progress. We should undoubtedly continue to see and demand more from these institutions, always aiming for a more inclusive and equitable society, a society that acknowledges the urgency to remove systemic oppressions that have for too long held back women, minorities and underprivileged groups.
